Sony Viao CPU upgrade?

My better half has a Sony Viao FE770 with a 1.8Ghz Intel T2400
processor. She wants to run Sims 3 which requires a minimum 2.0 processor

Looked up the specs, and the Intel T2600 @ 2.16Ghz seems to be a good
fit. same power, clock, package. Downloaded the CPU replacement
procedure, and the CPU can be replaced without soldering.

Has anyone any info on the practicality of replacing a T2400 with a
T2600, or any experiences on upgrading the FE CPU?

Please cc any replies to my email address

Thanks

I don't have specific info but the value of such a small upgrade is marginal
at best, you would do better to load up as much memory as it will take and
upgrade the video card drivers.

Agreed, your would be better served with with a memory upgrade.
You may also want to create a gaming profile that is totally stripped of
unnecessary services in Windows, and other apps, in order to get the
best performance from your system.

Yes, agree; and more memory and a dedicated profile have been
implemented already for Sims2. Unfortunately, the loader for Sims3
specifically make a check of the CPU speed, independent of the number of
cores (2), and will not let you install the game if the CPU speed is
less than 2 GhZ. Have two desktop PCs that would both work, but her bad
back prevents here from sitting in a straight chair for long periods.

Also tried a remote control arrangement where the game runs on the
desktop PC, and is controlled via VNC from the laptop, but VNC can not
paint the screen updates fast enough over the lan to keep up with the
game motion.

Read some bad reports on overclocking Sony laptops (it already runs
hot), and the specs for the T2600 indiacte the thermals are identical to
the current T2400, so heat should not be an issue.

Not ready to buy a new laptop if I can make this one work.

Thanks

Well if you're determined, i don't see heat being an issue, just
remember to thoroughly remove the old thermal paste/pad from the
replacement cpu & the heatsink before applying the new.
Getting a laptop cooling pad will also provide significant heat
dissipation as well.

Good news... Sims3 will run on a Intel Dual core 1.8Ghz processor,
contrary to guidance from EA Games. that requires a minimum of 2Ghz.

Yeah, a lot of those games use CPU 'speed' based on a Pentium 4. I have a
ThinkPad R51 with a (single core) 1.7GHz Pentium M (Dothan) which, when
benchmarked, is in excess of 140% as powerful as a Pentium 4 2GHz.
